Nosebleeds in children

Questions and Answers

I took my eldest son to the doctor today because I was worried about him having had 4 nosebleeds in a period of 48 hours. I'm used to him having maybe as many as eight nosebleeds a year, which is not considered too frequent, but being the concerned parent that I always am - some say too much of a concerned parent - but I don't care, I took him for a checkup anyway, after the recent nosebleeds seemed just a bit too much to be thought of as normal.

Prior to taking him to the doctor, I had questions I wanted answered, in particular about what causes nosebleeds, and I searched for the answers on Google. Below are the questions I asked, and the links to sites that gave me the answers.

When do you take a child with a nosebleed to the doctor?
This page also answered some of my other questions, and had information about:

  • Why a child should sit down and not lie down when his or her nose is bleeding;
  • How long one should pinch the nose for to stop the blood from flowing;
  • Why some children's noses bleed more than others
When should I worry about my child's frequent nosebleeds?

Causes and symptoms of nosebleeds, diagnosis, prevention, and methods of treatment

What can I expect a doctor to do about frequent nosebleeds?

This article about nosebleeds mentions a few of those words that get parents really worried, like:

  • cancerous nasal tumors
  • leukemia
  • high blood pressure
  • blood clotting disorders
  • internal bleeding
and I think if at all worried, parents should take their children to see a doctor immediately, and ask the doctor for advice, or request blood tests if the doctor doesn't suggest blood tests himself.

When is a nosebleed serious?

Plenty of information here including more information about:

  • platelets in the blood
  • blood vessels
  • mucous membrane irritation
  • emergency care
  • cauterization
  • nasal cavity
  • nostrils

A mother always worries about her child

An article I posted to my blog today too, about how parents, in particular mothers, worry so much about their children when they are ill, have a nose that is bleeding, or anything else where the mother feels "something is just not right" and whether they take their child to the doctor or not. The diagnosis of my son having his nose checked out today is in this article too.
