Proud of my son!My son's recent school oral - he got 90%
(about a person who made a contribution to improving the world)
My son is ten years old and his oral went something like this: Good morning class! Before I say my oral, I need to sort out a message. I'm hungry and forgot my lunch at home and need my mom to bring it to school. (He writes on a piece of paper "mom, I forgot my lunch, please bring it", and shows the class.) (He puts it on the floor and rolls it over a stick and ties it with a piece of string), saying "I need to tie this quite tightly so it doesn't come off during the long trip. Okay class, who is going to take this to my mother for me while I stay here and do my oral? It must be somebody who has good shoes and who is fit, because my mother lives 19 km away. Please hurry because I'm hungry". (just about the whole class put up their hands, me! me! me!) "Okay, okay, never mind, I want you to listen to my oral, I will sort it out later". (he puts the stick down and holds up a picture of Alexander Graham Bell) "Alexander Graham Bell was born in Scotland in 1847 and died at the age of 75 in Canada after a long illness. He contributed greatly to the world and communication by inventing the telephone when he was 29 years old. Various problems with his family helped him with experimenting with inventions". "After his son died from breathing problems, Alexander invented a metal vacuum machine that helped breathing". "Alexander's mother was deaf and he was always looking to invent things to help people communicate better, and live an easier life. He opened a school for deaf pupils". "Alexander tried to sell his telephone patent to a company for one hundred thousand dollars, but the president of the company said Alexander's invention was just a toy. But two years later, that same president said that if he could buy the telephone patent for 25 million dollars it would be a bargain"! "Alexander also invented a photophone that transmitted sound on a beam of light. He also invented and made a metal detector to help find a bullet in somebody's body. Alexander Graham Bell's inventions have changed the world and made it better"! "Now, excuse me class, I'm still hungry and need to go phone my mother. Thanks to Alexander Graham Bell"! (and walks towards the door of the classroom). by Teresa Schultz Written: August 2008
